Pulbcular is an in-house pitch project at The Monk Studio, designed to explore the aesthetics of horror in a fresh and visually captivating way. I am responsible for look development and lighting, carefully crafting an atmospheric and eerie visual style that supports the horror theme. My role involves experimenting with different lighting setups, color palettes, and texture details to evoke suspense and create a sense of tension.
Role: Lighting, Rendering and Compositing
Studio: The Monk Studios, Bangkok Thailand.
To capture that perfect Halloween vibe, the lighting usually has a low-key setup, with bright orange tones popping against a dark, cool blue background. This color combination helps bring out that horror movie!
In ghost-themed comedies or movies, a key lighting technique is mimicking the effect of a torch lit from beneath the chin, which is a classic style used to enhance the eerie and comedic effect. This underlighting is iconic in Thai ghost storytelling, adding a dramatic yet humorous touch to the visuals.
I gained a lot of valuable lighting experience from this project. In my opinion, maintaining continuity in the lighting is the most important aspect. For this project in 2016, I used Renderman RIS, which was fairly new at the time and had limited documentation.
